Sharing and Amplifying Community Voices

The Family Success Institute took on an ambitious project, launching a series of Community Action Forums to provide opportunities for New Jersey community members to come together. Recognizing that the people who know their communities best are those who live, work and grow within them, we proudly organized more than 40 Forums.

Convened by trusted local leaders, these Forums provided safe spaces for dialogue, allowing residents to voice concerns and frustrations while actively working toward solutions to address barriers to success for each specific community. This website hosts a library of files, including video, audio and data collected from the Forums – allowing us to hear directly from residents about how to improve opportunities and support for families.

Building on this work, the Forums are being followed by a series of Advocacy and Leadership Training Forums held across the state. These ongoing gatherings continue to bring communities together, grounded in the belief that those closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. Drawing on insights from the original Forums, these sessions are designed to equip community members with the tools and confidence to lead, advocate and create meaningful change from within. Because advocacy and leadership are not top-down processes – lasting change is driven by the voices, experiences and strengths of the community itself. The testimony from these meetings can be found in this library as well.

The barrier is, to me perfectly honest, this color of your skin. You know, I've said it before, a lot of people have said we haven't come too far from Dr. Martin Luther King. George Floyd gave people a lot of momentum. But it seems like it’s dying already. And we have to learn to stick…

Okay, so what are the most beautiful or encouraging aspects of your community? Who wants to go first?

I went to a vocational school in New York City, and became an electrician, I was working. But after the service, I went to City College. And it cost me nothing; it was totally free. And what I say to people, and when I think, you know, these people should hear that you're gathering this data…

We have to find a common ground to be able to… These kids need to learn job interview skills, how to look somebody in the eye when they talk, and how to be able to accept constructive criticism, how to tie a tie. I know some kids teenagers right now that I speak to on a…

The problem is the fact that like… I'm not even gonna call it lying, I'm just gonna say like, we have to bend the rules in order to survive. And this is just on a working level, you know. And if you get caught, you have to worry about if you get caught, things are gonna…
